There's a difference between a download that fails and an install that fails afterward. This article is about problems that happen before you even get a complete file, like a stuck progress bar, a failed download, or a browser warning.
If your file downloaded fine but won't install, see our separate APK not installing guide instead.
Download stuck or paused partway through
A download that freezes at the same percentage is usually a connection or download manager issue rather than a problem with the file itself.
- Cancel the current download and start it again from the download page.
- Keep your screen on and avoid switching apps until the download finishes.
- Make sure your browser's download manager isn't disabled in its settings.
"Network error" or the download fails immediately
This usually means the connection dropped mid-request or the network blocked the request entirely.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data to see if one works where the other doesn't.
- Turn off any active VPN, since some networks and VPNs filter APK file downloads.
- Try again after moving to an area with a stronger signal.
Download is extremely slow on mobile data
Mobile data speed can vary a lot by location, network congestion and your carrier plan.
- Switch to Wi-Fi if available for a faster, more stable download.
- Avoid downloading during peak network hours in your area if mobile data is consistently slow.
- Check that mobile data isn't throttled due to reaching a plan limit.
Browser warns the file "might be harmful"
Browsers commonly flag APK files generally, since they are outside the Play Store's review process, not necessarily because a specific file is unsafe. This warning appears for many legitimate APK downloads.
Only continue past this warning if you are downloading from the official download page and trust the source. Read our APK safety guide for how to judge whether a download link looks legitimate before proceeding.
Not enough space to save the file
If your phone is low on storage, the download can fail quietly or stop partway without a clear error.
- Check Settings > Storage for available free space.
- Delete unused apps, old downloads or media files to free up room.
- Restart the download once you've freed enough space.
Can't find the file after it finished downloading
The file is usually saved to your Downloads folder, but some browsers use their own download history list instead.
- Open your file manager app and check the Downloads folder.
- Check your browser's own Downloads or History section if the file manager doesn't show it.
- Search the file manager by file type (APK) if you still can't locate it.
Once you locate it, follow our installation guide for the install steps.
Download manager disabled or Data Saver blocking the file
Android's system Download Manager app and browser Data Saver features can both interfere with downloading larger files.
- Check Settings > Apps > Download Manager and make sure it isn't disabled.
- Turn off Data Saver mode in your browser's settings while downloading.
- Clear your browser's cache if downloads keep failing in the same app.
Try a different browser
If one browser consistently fails, a different browser app can rule out a browser-specific setting or bug.
Visit the download page in the alternate browser and attempt the download again with a stable connection.
Still having trouble downloading?
If the download keeps failing after trying the steps above, double-check you're using the current link on the download page, and once the file is fully downloaded but won't install, move on to our APK not installing guide.
