Keeping an APK-installed app updated works a little differently from the Play Store's automatic updates. This guide covers how to know an update is available, how to install it safely, and why updates occasionally fail.

If you haven't installed the app for the first time yet, start with our download guide and installation walkthrough instead.

How to Know an Update Is Available

Since the app isn't installed through the Play Store, it won't notify you the same way a Store app would. There are two main ways to find out a new version exists.

  • The app itself may show an in-app message or prompt when you open it, if the developer has built that in.
  • The download source linked on our download page is the place to check for the current version periodically.
We don't track or announce specific version numbers ourselves — always rely on what the app or official source currently shows you.

Updating an APK Over Your Existing Install

In most cases, you don't need to remove the old app first. Downloading the newer APK and installing it over the existing one keeps your data in place, as long as the new file comes from the same developer and uses the same app signature.

  1. Download the newer APK file from the trusted source, the same way described in our download guide.
  2. Open the downloaded file like you would for a first install.
  3. Android will recognize it as an update to the existing app rather than a brand-new install.
  4. Tap Update or Install, then wait for it to complete.
  5. Open the app and confirm it launches normally.

This process reuses the same install permission you may have already granted — if it was turned off, you'll need to briefly re-enable it as covered in our installation guide.

Why Your Data Usually Stays Intact

Android treats an APK update as the same app continuing, not a new one, as long as its internal package identity and digital signature match the version already installed. That's why your saved settings and local data typically survive an update.

  • Local preferences and cached files normally remain untouched during an update.
  • Any account-based data tied to a login is stored on the service side, not just your device, so it depends on how the app's accounts work.
  • A completely different APK — for example from an unrelated source — won't be treated as an update and may install as a second, separate app instead.

Why "App Not Installed" Can Happen During an Update

This error is common during updates specifically, and it usually comes down to one of two causes.

  • Signature conflict: the new APK was signed differently than your current install (for example, it came from a different source than before). Android refuses to overwrite an app with one that doesn't match.
  • Downgrade attempt: some updates block installing an older version number over a newer one already on your phone.
  • Corrupted or incomplete download: the same download issues covered in our APK download guide can also affect update files.

If you hit a signature conflict, the safest fix is usually to uninstall the current app first, then install the new APK fresh — but only after reading the section below about backing up your login.

Back Up or Remember Your Login First

If an update ever requires uninstalling the old app first, any data stored only on your device could be lost. Before updating, make sure you know your login details and, if the app offers any account linking or recovery option, that it's set up.
  • Write down or securely save your username, login method or linked account details.
  • Check if the app offers a way to link your progress to an account rather than storing it only locally.
  • Never share your password, PIN or verification codes with anyone claiming to help you "restore" your account — that's a common scam approach.

Clearing Cache After Updating

If the app behaves oddly after an update — slow loading, visuals not refreshing, or a stuck screen — clearing its cache often helps without affecting your saved data.

  1. Go to Settings > Apps and find the installed app.
  2. Tap Storage (the wording may vary slightly by brand).
  3. Tap Clear Cache — not Clear Data, which would remove local saved information.
  4. Reopen the app and let it reload fully.
Clear Data is a separate, more drastic option that resets the app's local information. Only use it if you specifically intend to reset the app, and only after confirming you won't lose anything you need.

Don't Uninstall Unless You Need To

It's tempting to uninstall and reinstall whenever something seems off, but this isn't necessary for a routine update and can cost you local progress. Reserve uninstalling for cases where:

  • You hit a persistent signature conflict error that a normal update install can't resolve.
  • The app is seriously misbehaving even after clearing cache and restarting your phone.
  • You were advised to do so after checking our installation problems guide.

Keep Using a Safe Update Source

The same safety standards that apply to your first download apply every time you update. Don't let familiarity make you less careful.

  • Always get update files from the source linked on our download page, not from random forwarded links.
  • Re-check that a prompted "update" inside the app actually points to a legitimate source before tapping it.
  • If something about an update prompt feels off — unexpected pop-ups, requests for personal details — stop and read our APK safety guide.
